The story of Cape Jason

Cape Jason

Of all the peninsulas on the Black Sea coast, this is the only one with a church standing on it. Yason Cape, within Çaytepe village in the Perşembe district, takes its name from Jason, who, according to the legend, came ashore here with the Argonauts during the quest for the Golden Fleece.

The Yason Church was built in 1868 by the Greek and Georgian Orthodox people of the area and, after suffering damage, was restored in 2004; look up at its dome, which carries features of Ottoman architecture. The site itself is far older: in the 3rd century AD, Christians came here for the Feast of Lights after celebrating the birth of Jesus in Giresun.

Search the rocks for fish pools carved into stone 4 thousand years ago, and the shells heaped along the shore. Protected as a 1st-degree archaeological site, the cape offers views of sunrise and sunset 320 days a year, and from here you can see Ünye Cape.
