The story of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu National Museum

Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu National Museum

Built inside the walls of Krujë Castle, this museum looks like a medieval fortress tower, and that is deliberate. Its architects drew on traditional Albanian stone towers, mainly those of northern Albania, and on medieval Romanesque architecture. It was designed by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, the daughter of Enver Hoxha.

Construction began in September 1978 under Robert Kote, and meanwhile historians led by Professor Kristo Frashëri and painters led by Bashkim Ahmeti prepared the displays and mural paintings. On 1 November 1982 it opened to the public. The castle around it was attacked three times by Ottoman troops, in 1450, 1466 and 1467, and this stronghold helped Skanderbeg defend Albania for more than two decades.

Inside, paintings, armour and other objects from his time follow his life and military feats. Look for the replica of his famous helmet topped with a goat's head; the original is on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
