The story of Fredrik Church

On 9 September 1720, work began on this church on Stortorget, built to replace the city's temporary wooden church, and Governor Salomon von Otter laid the first stone. The foundation wall was completed on 25 August 1721, and the church was consecrated in 1744. Crown Prince Adolf Frederick was present at the ceremony, yet the church was named in honour of King Frederick I. It was built in the Baroque style to a design by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, and its towers are a notable feature; the spires on top were completed in 1758. Listen for the carillon in the south tower: there are 35 bells, installed in 1967, and the clock chimes three times a day.
Inside, the neoclassical pulpit of 1854 was designed by Johan Adolf Hawerman, and the carved wooden font was a gift from the shipbuilder Gilbert Sheldon. When Lars Wahlberg built a new organ, the contract called for 29 stops, but when he finished in 1764 he had put in 34 voices, driven by six large bellows.
