The story of Krušedol monastery

Krušedol monastery

Krušedol has been called the spiritual beacon of Fruška Gora and the Second Studenica: what Studenica was for medieval Serbia, it is said, Krušedol was for the Serbs along the Danube. It was founded between 1509 and 1514 by Saint Maksim Branković, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Srem, and his mother Saint Angelina, as the burial place of the last Serbian despot family, the Brankovićs. By 1670 it had the largest brotherhood on the mountain, 90 monks and 12 elders.

During the Great Migration of 1690 the monks fled to Szentendre with the relics and treasures, returning in 1697, and in 1716 the retreating Ottomans looted and burned the monastery, which was later rebuilt. Look for the sundial above a window on the east side; it tells the time from 6 to 17 hours. Buried here are the whole Branković family, the patriarchs Arsenije III Čarnojević and Arsenije IV, Princess Ljubica Obrenović and King Milan Obrenović.

The monastery appears on the 5 dinar coin.
