The story of Cofete

Cofete

On the wild western side of the Jandía peninsula, inside Jandía Natural Park, lies one of the most remote corners of Fuerteventura. Cofete beach runs for about 14 km, and its sand shifts in colour from yellow peach to earthy brown.

Beside it is a tiny hamlet, Casas de Cofete, home to only about 25 people. Near the beach there is a small cemetery, and a monument built of stones with a staircase and a green statue of a man with some sheep.

On the mountain slope not far away stands a lonely house with a small tower: the Villa Winter, built shortly after the end of the Second World War, in 1946. Stand on the beach, look along its whole length, and then up at the mountains behind the villa.
